My goal as an art educator is not to create a classroom full of professional artists, but a classroom full of creative thinkers and problem solvers.  Consequently, I believe in the importance of play in the art room.  Whether I’m working with kindergarteners or seniors, experimental, risk-taking, artmaking is something I always encourage.  In my classroom, art learning is done through interdisciplinary exploration and inquiry-based approaches.  This teaches my students how to confidently interpret and make sense of world surrounding them.  I believe teaching across curriculums significantly increases student engagement and is a crucial element in the development of creative thinkers.  Through the incorporation of big ideas, or life-centered issues, I relate art back to the lives of my students and help them make connections outside the art room.  I also work to bring excitement and energy into my lessons.  My job as an educator is to facilitate a love of learning, and if I am not interested in what I’m teaching, why should my students be?

Lastly, but certainly not least, kindness, or the ability to bear the vulnerability of others, is an important aspect in my classroom.  I work hard to establish a safe space in which my students feel comfortable sharing their opinions and creations without fear of judgment or criticism.  Collaboration and group discussion play a large role in my classroom dynamic and help to promote a positive environment centered on teamwork and support.
